Power cuts in Salem: what to expect
Salem district combines heavy industry with hill terrain — a large steel plant, textile hosiery units and the Mettur dam power/irrigation system sits alongside the cooler hill climate of Yercaud. Industrial feeder maintenance is common through the week, while residential areas around Salem city typically see fewer, shorter shutdown windows.
Before a scheduled shutdown in Salem
- Charge phones, inverter batteries and power banks the night before.
- Keep the 1912 helpline saved and your service connection number handy — it speeds up any fault report from Salem city or nearby.
- Unplug fridges, TVs and computers a few minutes before the cut and after restoration, to avoid surge damage.
- Keep the 1912 helpline saved, along with your service connection number.
Frequently asked questions about Salem power cuts
How current is the shutdown list for Salem?
It reflects whatever TNPDCL has published most recently for Salem district. Notices are usually added a day ahead, so checking again later in the day can surface updates that weren't posted this morning.
How do I know when Salem's power will be back?
The shutdown notice itself states an end time for that area of Salem. If it's a fault rather than a planned cut, call 1912 for a restoration estimate instead.
How fast does 1912 respond for Salem district?
Response depends on the fault's scale, not the district — a single-house issue near Mettur is usually quicker to resolve than a wider outage. 1912 logs the complaint regardless and routes it to the right section office.
Where can I see the actual tariff slabs used for Salem?
The tariff page on this site lists the full current slab structure, which applies statewide — the same rates cover Salem district, Mettur, and everywhere else in Tamil Nadu.
Do industrial areas in Salem get separate shutdown notices from residential areas?
Often, yes. Salem district's HT (high-tension) industrial feeders serving a large steel plant, textile hosiery units and the Mettur dam power/irrigation system are usually maintained on a different schedule than the LT feeders supplying homes in Salem city and Yercaud, so a notice for one doesn't always mean the other is affected.
